Mekong Cruiser
Are you a cruise line?
No. Mekong Cruiser compares boats and ships run by other companies and takes enquiries by form. We do not operate any vessel, and we do not speak for any operator.
Which is the cheaper way onto the Mekong, a delta boat or a ship?
Per night the published fares overlap, but a delta boat is one or two nights and a ship to Siem Reap is seven, so the total is very different. A single night on a delta barge was published from USD 266 per person (Secret Retreats, checked October 2026); a 9-day port-to-port sailing on RV Toum Tiou II from USD 1,754 (CroisiEurope, autumn 2026).
Can a ship take me all the way to Angkor?
Only in high water, roughly August to November depending on the operator, and even then many larger ships end at Kampong Cham and finish by road. The rest of the year the last part to Siem Reap is by road, or by air on Aqua Expeditions. The water page explains the months.
How do we start?
Send the form with a month and the number of travellers. We reply by email to the address you give, with the boats that fit and the questions we still need answered.

Cruises
Which cruise do most first-time visitors choose?
We do not publish sales figures. As a rule of thumb, travellers with a week or more for Vietnam and Cambodia together look at Saigon to Phnom Penh; those with only Vietnam look at a delta overnight.
Can we start in Cambodia and finish in Vietnam?
Yes, most ships run both ways. Heritage Line, for example, lists its 3-night Phnom Penh cruise and its 7-night Siem Reap cruise in both directions.
Is a 4-night Siem Reap to Phnom Penh cruise worth considering?
It is listed by Heritage Line, with a 3-night version downstream only. In low water much of it depends on how far up the Tonle Sap the ship can go, so we look at your month before suggesting it.
Do you book private charters?
We can enquire. Song Xanh sampans are sold only as private charters, and Mekong Eyes runs one- and two-cabin boats. Whole-ship charters of larger vessels are a matter for each operator.

Cai Be to Can Tho, 1 night
Which direction should we choose?
On Bassac's published itinerary, Cai Be to Can Tho reaches Cai Rang market on the second morning; Can Tho to Cai Be boards around midday and finishes at Cai Be the next morning. If the market matters to you, sail towards Can Tho.
Is the road transfer from Saigon included?
Usually not. The Bassac itinerary we read excludes it, and Le Cochinchine sells an optional shuttle. We price it as a separate line so you can compare like with like.
Are children allowed?
Song Xanh publishes child rates through a reseller: ages 4 to 8 pay half, 9 to 11 pay three quarters. Other operators set their own rules, which we check for your dates.
What happens if it rains?
The boats sail in the rainy season, which in Can Tho runs from about May to November. Shore stops may be shortened in heavy rain; ask each operator how much of its deck is under cover.

Two nights in the delta
Loop or one way?
Loop if your next stop is Saigon; one way to Chau Doc if your next stop is Phnom Penh. The one-way run saves you doubling back through the delta by road.
Can we add a third night?
Le Cochinchine publishes a 4-day, 3-night cruise from USD 427 per person (checked October 2026), and Mekong Eyes says its cruises run up to five days. Ask and we compare the options for your dates.
Do we need a Cambodian visa for the Chau Doc speedboat?
Most passports do. Cambodian embassies list visas on arrival at the Kaam Samnor river checkpoint. Check your own nationality before travel.
Is the high-water season a problem for delta boats?
Not usually. High water from about September to November floods the upper delta and changes the scenery. Pandaw notes that low bridges can block access into Chau Doc in October and November, so we check the route for your date.

Saigon to Phnom Penh
Upstream or downstream?
Upstream, Saigon to Phnom Penh, is the version Pandaw publishes for its new 2026 ship. Heritage Line runs its three-night cruise both ways. Choose by where your flights start and end.
Do we get a Cambodian visa on the boat?
Cambodian embassies list visas on arrival at the Kaam Samnor river checkpoint. The e-visa is not listed for that crossing. Each operator explains how it handles the formalities; ask before you travel.
Is there a four-night version?
Mekong Eyes sells a 4-day Saigon to Phnom Penh trip, and Victoria Mekong appears in agent packages with a 4-night ship segment from Can Tho, whose end port we confirm before quoting. Heritage Line and Pandaw publish three nights.
How do we get from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap afterwards?
By air or by road. Siem Reap's airport opened in 2023 about 50 km east of the town, roughly an hour and a quarter by car. We list the options with your quote.

Saigon to Siem Reap, 7 nights
Which months can a ship reach Siem Reap by water?
Roughly August to November, but operators define it differently: Aqua says mid-August to November, Pandaw gives August to November in one place and August to October in another. Outside those months the finish is by road, or by air on Aqua.
Is the 7-night cruise still worth it in low water?
For many travellers, yes: the delta, the border, Phnom Penh and the Tonle Sap river villages are all still on the river. What changes is the last day. If that day is the reason you want the cruise, travel in high water or choose Saigon to Phnom Penh instead.
Does the fare include Angkor?
It depends on the package. CroisiEurope sells Toum Tiou II both port to port and as an 11-day trip with Angkor; Viking's 15-day holiday includes hotel nights in Siem Reap. The Angkor Pass is USD 62 for three days on the official site.
Which direction is better?
Most ships run both. Downstream from Siem Reap suits travellers who see Angkor first and fly home from Saigon. In low water the road transfer simply moves to the first day.

Prices
Why is your quote higher than one I found elsewhere?
Usually because the two quotes cover different things: transfers, drinks, a hotel night, the low-water finish or a different cabin. Send us the other quote and we will set the two side by side, line by line. If the other is simply cheaper for the same thing, we say so.
Do you add a fee to the operator's fare?
Your quote shows the total you pay and what it covers. If any part of it is a service charge of ours, it is listed as its own line.
Why do some fares appear in Australian dollars?
Because that is how the operator or agent published them. AmaWaterways' Australian site and Wendy Wu Tours Australia both price in AUD. We quote in the currency the operator uses for your booking.
Are published fares guaranteed?
No. They are the operator's figures on the day we read them, and many carry no validity date. The fare that counts is the one the operator confirms in writing for your sailing.
Read in full: Prices.
How to book
Can we book direct with the operator instead?
Yes, if you prefer. Many operators sell direct. What we add is the comparison across operators, the season check for your dates and one place to ask questions.
How far ahead should we book?
Small boats fill first because they have few cabins: a six-cabin barge takes twelve guests at most. For the high-water months on ships that reach the Tonle Sap, ask early.
Do you need our passport details at the enquiry stage?
No. Nationality is enough to check the border rules. Full passport details are only needed once a cabin is being confirmed.
What happens if the operator cancels a sailing?
The operator's terms decide the refund or transfer. We pass on its notice and help find another sailing if you want one.
Read in full: How to book.
Ports
Do we need a hotel night before boarding?
Usually not in the delta: boats and ships board after a morning drive from Saigon. Some travellers add a night in Can Tho to see Cai Rang market at dawn on their own.
Where do ships board in Saigon itself?
Most published itineraries we read board at My Tho after a coach from a Saigon meeting point. Scenic's sample itinerary lists Ho Chi Minh City as its first port, and Mekong Eyes runs round trips from Saigon.
Can a cruise end at Chau Doc?
Yes. Bassac publishes a two-night Cai Be to Chau Doc cruise, and from Chau Doc a daily speedboat continues to Phnom Penh.
Is Kampong Cham worth a page of its own?
For most travellers it is a place to leave the ship rather than to stay; the road to Siem Reap starts there.

Cai Be and My Tho
Is it worth seeing the Cai Be floating market?
Only as a glance from the boat. National press reported it weakening in 2024. Cai Rang near Can Tho is the market that survives, smaller than it was.
Which town is nearer Saigon?
My Tho, about 71 km by road against about 108 km for Cai Be.
Is My Tho still in Tien Giang province?
No. Since 1 July 2025 Tien Giang has been part of Dong Thap province. The town names are unchanged.
Can we leave luggage in Saigon?
That depends on your hotel and the operator. Most cruise passengers take everything on board, since few of these cruises return to the same place.
Read in full: Cai Be and My Tho.
Can Tho
Which direction gives us Cai Rang market?
On Bassac's published itinerary, Cai Be to Can Tho. Sailing from Can Tho, you would need a night in the city beforehand to see the market.
How early do we need to be at Cai Rang?
Trading is busiest roughly 06:00 to 07:30, and boats from Ninh Kieu take 30 to 40 minutes, so most people leave the hotel at about 05:00 to 05:30.
Can we fly out of Can Tho afterwards?
Domestic flights only, according to the airport's listed routes. For international flights, return to Saigon by road.
Is Can Tho still the capital of Can Tho province?
Can Tho is a centrally governed city, and since July 2025 it also includes the former Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces.
Read in full: Can Tho.
Phnom Penh
Does the ship provide a transfer from the quay?
It depends on the operator. Pandaw's 2026 itinerary says there are no transfers in Phnom Penh because the ship docks in the city centre. Aqua includes shared transfers between its meeting points and the ship.
Which airport do we fly from?
Techo International, which Vietnam Airlines' guide gives as taking over Phnom Penh's commercial flights from 9 September 2025. Check your ticket.
Can we get a Cambodian visa when the ship crosses the border?
Cambodian embassies list visas on arrival at the Kaam Samnor river checkpoint; the e-visa is not listed there. Confirm the rule for your passport.
How do we get from Phnom Penh to Angkor?
By air or by road. Siem Reap's airport is about 50 km from the town, about an hour and a quarter by car.
Read in full: Phnom Penh.
Siem Reap and the Tonle Sap
Will our ship reach Siem Reap by water?
Only in high water, roughly August to November, and only on ships that cross the lake. Viking, Scenic and Victoria Mekong end at Kampong Cham and continue by road all year.
How long is the road transfer in low water?
It depends on where the ship stops, which changes with the water. The operator sets it; we ask for the figure for your sailing.
Which Angkor Pass should we buy?
For a three-night stay, the 3-day pass at USD 62, valid on any three days within seven. The 1-day pass is USD 37.
Where is the airport?
Siem Reap–Angkor International (SAI), about 50 km east of the town, about an hour and a quarter by car.

Delta boat or Cambodia ship
Is a delta boat just a cheaper version of a ship?
No. It is a different trip: shorter, smaller, inside Vietnam, and through narrower water. For a Vietnam-only trip it is often the more fitting choice, not a compromise.
Can we do a delta boat and a ship on the same trip?
You can, but the ship's first two days cover much of the same delta. Most people choose one or the other.
Which option is easier with limited mobility?
Neither is simple. Several ships state there is no lift, and the small boats publish little about access. Tell us what you need and we ask each operator before suggesting a boat.
We only have ten days for Vietnam and Cambodia. Which?
Usually a delta night or the three-night ship to Phnom Penh. Seven nights on the river leaves little time for Saigon or Angkor in ten days.
Read in full: Delta boat or Cambodia ship.
High and low water
Is low water a reason not to cruise?
No. The delta, the border, Phnom Penh and much of the Tonle Sap river are still on the water. What you lose is the arrival at Siem Reap by boat.
Why do operators give different months?
Their pages do not say. Pandaw's guide even gives two different ranges on the same page, so we ask the operator about your specific sailing.
Does high water make the cruise rougher?
The operators we read do not say so. What they do note is changed stops: bridges near Chau Doc in October and November, and some villages reachable only at certain levels.
Can we see the flood in the delta from a delta boat?
The upper delta floods from about September to November. A two-night cruise towards Chau Doc goes furthest into it, subject to the bridge limits Pandaw mentions.

Cabins and inclusions
Are balconies worth paying for on the Mekong?
On Heritage Line's ships every category already has one, so the question does not arise. On other ships it depends on the price gap, which we show line by line.
Which ships have no lift?
CroisiEurope states there is no lift on Toum Tiou II; AmaWaterways states there is no elevator on AmaDara or AmaMaya. Most other pages we read do not say either way.
Is alcohol included?
On Aqua Mekong, selected wines and beer are included; on Pandaw's 2026 Saigon to Phnom Penh cruise, only local water, coffee and tea are. Other operators vary.
How big is a delta barge cabin?
About 9 m² on Bassac, with an en-suite shower, and about 10 m² for Le Cochinchine's Deluxe cabin. Song Xanh sampans list 20 m² for two adults.

About
Do you work for any of the cruise lines named here?
No. Ships are named as public facts with their sources. We do not speak for any operator.
Why should we book through you rather than direct?
You do not have to. What we add is a comparison across operators, a season check for your dates and answers to the questions operators' pages leave open. If booking direct suits you better, we say so.
Do you cover the upper Mekong in Laos?
No. Heritage Line's Anouvong and other Laos ships sail a different section of the river.
In which language do you work?
English, by email.
Read in full: About.
Contact
Is there a phone number or an office?
No. Mekong Cruiser works through the form and email only.
Can we ask a general question without planning a trip yet?
Yes, if it is about choosing a Mekong cruise. The cruise and port pages answer the common ones.
Can we send a link to a ship we found elsewhere?
Yes. Put the ship's name in the optional field or the notes. We check what we can confirm about it.
What if we have not heard back?
Check your spam folder first. If there is still nothing, send the form again with the same details.
